Selecting A Generator – Which Will Suit Your Needs?

TAGS: None

There are many options for the home owner and business operator when the time comes to choose a generator: so many, actually, that it can be quite confusing to those who do not have the knowledge. What type of fuel do you prefer – diesel or petrol? Do you need a small “emergency” portable generator for the home, or one with plenty of power to act as a back up when the mains electricity is not available to your business? If you don’t have much of an understanding of how honda generators work, you will find it difficult to select one.

How then, do you make a choice? To begin with, you should decide for what precise purpose you will need the generator, as this will help you to determine the capacity. If you require a generator for home use, it would not make sense to choose a heavy duty industrial generator, as it would supply more power than you actually need. Similarly, if your requirement is to run machinery, a small generator will not be sufficient as it is guaranteed to fail when you need it most.

Diesel and petrol generators operate in a similar way. Diesel electrical generators are most often found in agricultural environments, on construction sites and in factories and warehouses: in fact, wherever there is a requirement for a portable and reliable source of energy. This can be due to the absence of mains power (for example construction sites) or the mains power is unreliable (such as with agricultural areas and factories).

In determining your generator requirements, you have to by necessity choose the most efficient model. The size of the portable generators is specified by the output and speed provided by the manufacturer: usually, a more powerful generator has a greater output and speed. Most generators can be categorised between an output of 5KVA (kilovolt-ampere units) and 2500KVA. The lower KVA generators can be used in the home, whereas the those with a higher KVA rating provide more than enough power for most industrial applications.

The model’s efficiency rating is the initial step: however, you will also have to determine the load you have to supply. To do this, you just have to work out the power demand, whether this be for home or business use, during normal operating conditions. The amount of power that the generator is capable of providing will indicate whether it is powerful enough to meet the requirements of your home or business: the the amount of fuel the tank holds only indicates how long the generator will operate between refueling. You should always choose a generator that can give a little more power than you require, thus reducing the possibility of overloading.

Another factor you may have to think about is the noise output of the portable generators. Does the generator need to be run during the night in the home? If this is the case, it is a good idea to select a silent diesel generator as the noise output of these is much much reduced when compared to than traditional diesel generators. It is also a good idea to choose a silent diesel generator with a decent sized fuel tank, to guarantee that it runs overnight, so you don’t have to be worried about refueling in the wee small hours. The decibel output is not such an important aspect if it is used in an industrial situation, or in daylight hours.

If you only need to use the generator occasionally, it makes sense to buy a good quality used generator, as this will cost far less.

Having a new diesel generator available for emergency situations, such as natural disasters or power outages, or perhaps when there is no mains electricity (camping is one such example) is a great idea. However, it pays to to do your homework and carefully choose a generator that best suits your individual needs.
